University of Toledo: Savage Arena Renovation

Toledo, Ohio

Transforming a vintage 1976 precast concrete building into a state-of-the-art athletic facility within a tight construction schedule and coordinating multiple prime contractors for four concurrent projects was Mosser’s challenge for the University of Toledo Savage Arena Renovation.  By providing leadership with “can do” team spirit, Mosser beat the seemingly impossible nine-month deadline and not only had everything required in place for opening night of basketball season, they had the team practicing on the floor two weeks early!

The transformation, known as Building Champions by UT, encompassed the following projects:

  • Sullivan Athletic Complex was added to Savage Arena
  • Savage Arena/main construction work to remake the facility
  • Parking, sidewalk and driveway reconfiguration
  • Classroom addition/central steam plant to create a steam generation facility in the basement of Savage Arena

Work began in January with 56 caissons sunk in the numbing winter conditions to begin the Sullivan Athletic Center entryway.  In a tight area of the basement, walls were removed, concrete floors cut, pits dug, and a previously unknown main electrical feed for the building relocated.  Amazingly, Savage Hall remained occupied through the majority of the renovation.

All debris was separated and recycled while environmentally friendly construction materials were incorporated for its LEED Gold certification.

Savage Arena now features arena seating, a basketball court, scoreboard, additional luxury suites, an entry pavilion and VIP entrance, locker rooms, athletic offices and a training and weight lifting room.
